Meisje met de parel – final part

Ze is af! Het heeft een flinke tijd geduurd (ik zie dat mijn laatste blogpost hier van november vorig jaar was, oeps) maar uiteindelijk is ze afgekomen! Meisje met de parel is af! (als je niet weet waar ik het over heb, zie hier deel 1 en deel 2 van dit project). Ze heeft een flinke tijd stil gelegen, maar ergens in maart dit jaar begon het toch wel weer te kriebelen. Ik vond het namelijk super leuk om aan haar te werken, het was alleen zo ontzettend veel werk, er leek geen einde aan te komen! Afgelopen zomer had ik veel tijd dus kon ik een eindsprint trekken. Gek is dat altijd, als iets een tijd stilligt lijkt het altijd zo enorm veel werk, maar als je dan toch bezig gaat, gaat het vaak heel hard. En dat was hier dus ook zo!

She is done! It has taken a while (my last blogpost here was posted in November, oeps!) but she is done! Gearl with a pearl earring is done! (if you have no idea what I am talking  about, check part 1 and part 2 here). I have not worked on her for a couple of months, but somewhere in March I really wanted to get her finished. I liked working on her a lot, it was just a lot of work. there didn't seem to be an end to it! During my summer holidays I had a lot of time on my hands, and then, all of a sudden, she was done!

Ik ben zo blij met het resultaat! Ik vind haar echt heel mooi geworden en ik vind dat je heel goed kunt zien dat het het Meisje met de parel voorstelt. Ik ben ook heel blij dat ik heb gekozen voor het Merino Soft garen, ik vind de kleuren echt prachtig, rustig en diep, en dat past heel goed bij dit schilderij. En het is ook nog eens super zacht!

I am so happy with the result! I think she look beautiful. She does look like the original doesn't she? I am glad I chose to use Merino Soft yarn for this project, the colours are gorgeous, calm and intense, it just fits so well with the painting. And besides that it is so incredibly soft!

Ik wilde per se de vierkantjes aan elkaar zetten met de kleur garen van een van de twee vierkantjes die ik op dat moment aan elkaar zette (want dan zag je de naad niet). Het was rustgevend werk, je ziet de deken groeien. Hoewel het veel tijd koste ben ik achteraf wel heel blij dat ik dat zo gedaan heb, want het resultaat is echt een stuk mooier dan bij Het huwelijksportret (daar had ik alles vastgezet met donkerbruin, en dat zie je toch).

I wanted to hand-sew the squares together with the colour of the yarn I had used for one of the two squares I wanted to attach to each other (because that way you wouldn't see the jointing). The work was soothing, the blanket grew under my hands. Eventhough it took a lot of time, I am glad I did it this way, because the result is so much better than with Het huwelijksportret (I used dark brown yarn for all the squares, and it shows).

Zoals je in deel 1 van deze serie kunt lezen was mijn werkwijze als volgt: ik verpixelde het schilderij, maakte een raster met hetzelfde aantal vierkantjes, ik maakte een staalkaart met alle kleuren garen, gaf die kleuren nummers en vulde die nummers aan de hand van het verpixelde schilderij in op het raster. Zo ontstond het patroon. Als ik wilde haken hoefde ik alleen maar op het raster te kijken om te weten welk kleur garen ik nodig had. Super simpel!

In part 1 of this series I explained my working procedure: I pixelated the painting, I made a grid with the same amount of squares, I took samples of the yarn, stuck them to a piece of paper and gave each colour a number. Finally, I filled in the numbers of the yarn in the grid by searching for the right colours on the pixelated painting. That’s how I made the pattern. When I wanted to crochet I just had to take a look on the grid to know what yarn I had to use. So easy!

Een wijze vrouw (mijn moeder en beeldend kunstenaar) zei eens tegen mij: je moet net zo tevreden zijn met de voorkant van je werk als met de achterkant. Ik heb daarom veel werk besteed aan het wegwerken van de draadjes, ik wilde die achterkant mooi hebben. Daardoor is de achterkant van het kleed een spiegelbeeld geworden van de voorkant, grappig!

A wise women (my mother and visual artist) once told me: you have to be just as pleased with the fornt of your work as with the back of your work. So, I took some time to work on sewing in the ends, that back had to be beautiful! Now, the back of the blanket is a mirror image of the front :)

Ik heb eerst alle gekleurde vierkantjes gehaakt en die vervolgens in horizontale rijen aan elkaar gezet. Vervolgens heb ik die rijen weer aan elkaar gemaakt. Op die manier ontstond haar profiel, daarna kon ik de deken aanvullen met zwarte vierkantjes. Om het geheel af te maken heb ik een rand gehaakt van simpele stokjes (de rand moest niet teveel afleiden) in Lizzy van Scheepjes (kleur 03), omdat ik graag een gouden lijst wilde. Dat hoort zo bij een schilderij!

First, I made all the coloured squares and I attached them in horizontal rows. Then I sew the horizontal rows together, that way I made her body. The next step was adding the black squares, so it became a rectangle. To finish the blanket I added a golden border with Lizzy (colour 03) to resemble a golden frame. That's how it's supposed to be with a painting I think!

Mocht je trouwens Meisje met de parel in het echt willen zien (het echte schilderij dus, van Vermeer): ze hangt in het Mauritshuis in Den Haag. Ik heb dat natuurlijk ook gedaan in het kader van mijn project, ik vind het altijd zo bijzonder om schilderijen waar je van houdt in het echt te zien! Het maken van 'mijn meisje' was een lang proces, maar ik vond het ontzettend leuk om te doen. Ik ben blij met haar!

IIf you would like to see Girl with a pearl earring in the flesh (the painting, by Vermeer): you can find her in the Mauritshuis in The Hague, The Netherlands. I visited her because I wanted to see her while making my blanket. I think it is so special to see paintings you love for real! It was a long process, making 'my girl' as I called her, but I really liked doing it. I love how she turned out!

Meisje met de parel - part 2

Het is tijd voor een update! Drie weken geleden begon ik met de 'Meisje met de parel' deken en ik heb ondertussen een flink aantal vierkantjes gehaakt. Deel 1 van deze serie vind je hier. Ik ben nu ter hoogte van haar ogen (ik haak van boven naar beneden) en was erg benieuwd hoe al die vierkantjes naast elkaar er uit zouden zien (ik bewaar ze per rij op sate prikkers) dus ik ging naar zolder om ze daar uit te leggen. Dat had natuurlijk ook in de woonkamer gekund, maar dat leek me een minder geslaagd plan aangezien ik twee kittens heb die alles wat met wol te maken heeft bijzonder interessant vinden.

It is update time! I started the ' Girl with a pearl earring' blanket about three weeks ago, and I crocheted quite a few squares so far. You can find part 1 of this series here. I have reached her eyes (I crochet top down) and I was curious about how all those squares would look like next to each other (I keep them stacked on wooden sticks). I went to the attic, because there were no playful kittens there and laid all the squares on the ground.

Daar begint ze te verschijnen! Zien jullie haar al? Ik heb nu 17 van de 52 rijen gehaakt, maar uiteindelijk moet het een vierkant worden, dus er moeten nog een flink aantal zwarte vierkantjes omheen. Het meisje is nu ongeveer een meter breed.

There she is! Can you see her appear? Ik have made 17 out of 52 rows so far, but eventually the blanket will be a square so there will be a lot of back squares surrounding what you can see on the picture. The girl is about a meter wide.

Zo bewaar ik mijn vierkantjes. Het garen is trouwens echt super zacht! Dat moet wel een heerlijke deken worden uiteindelijk :)

Ik vind het altijd handig om per project een tas of een doos te hebben, dat kan ik dan makkelijk naast me neerzetten op de bank, alles bij elkaar. De uitgelezen plek voor een kat om te gaan liggen natuurlijk. Tot de volgende update!

I like putting different projects in different bags or boxes, so I can easily pick it up and put it on the couch next to me. The perfect place for a kitten to sleep of course. See you with the next update!

Meisje met de parel - part 1

Het is tijd voor een nieuw, groot project! Ik vind het heerlijk om met meerdere projecten tegelijk bezig te zijn, het liefst een paar kleinere en één grote. Daarom ga ik na mijn Frans Hals avontuur weer van een schilderij een verpixelde deken maken!

It is time for a new, big project! I like working on several projects at the same time, preferably a couple of small ones and one big project. That’s why I wanted to crochet another pixelated blanket of a painting, like I did with the Huwelijksportret by Frans Hals earlier this year.

Ik werd geprikkeld door het nieuwe Merino Soft garen van Scheepjes, omdat de bolletjes van die mooie kunstenaars namen hebben. Ik koos de kleuren uit die ik nodig had en zodra ik de bolletjes in huis had wist ik dat dit een heel goede keuze was: het garen is super zacht, de kleuren zijn prachtig en het haakt heerlijk!

I decided to start this project because of the new Merino Soft yarn by Scheepjes, because the skeins have been named after several artists. I selected the colours I needed and as soon as the skeins arrived I knew I made the right choice: the yarn is super soft, the colours are vibrant and it crochets like a dream!

Ik wilde dit keer graag een schilderij nahaken dat iedereen kent, ik wilde dat veel mensen het schilderij meteen zouden herkennen. Daarnaast wilde ik dat het schilderij van een Nederlandse kunstenaar was én dat het kleurrijk zou zijn. Op de een of andere manier was er maar één optie voor mij: ‘Het meisje met de parel’ van Johannes Vermeer!

This time, I wanted to crochet a painting that a lot of people would recognize once they saw it. Furthermore, I wanted it to be made by a Dutch artist ánd I wanted the painting to be colorful. There was only one option for me: ‘Meisje met de parel’ (‘Girl with a pearl earring’) by Johannes Vermeer!

Ik ga hetzelfde te werk als de vorige keer. Dus ik verpixel het schilderij, maak een raster met hetzelfde aantal vierkantjes, ik maak een staalkaart met alle kleuren garen, geef die kleuren nummers en vul die nummers aan de hand van het verpixelde schilderij in op het raster. Zo ontstaat het patroon.

I will work in the same way as I did last time. So, I will pixelate the painting, I will make a grid with the same amount of squares, I will take samples of the yarn, stick them to a piece of paper and give each colour a number. Finally, I will fill in the numbers of the yarn in the grid by searching for the right colours on the pixelated painting. That’s how the pattern comes alive.

Ik haak met naald 4.5 en ik maak granny squares om de pixels na te bootsen. Ik heb al een aantal vierkantjes gehaakt en ze worden ongeveer 4.5 bij 4.5cm groot. In totaal moet ik minstens 1800 vierkantjes haken, dus ik heb nog even te gaan! Ik vind het leuk om jullie op de hoogte te houden van dit project en af en toe over het meisje te bloggen, in plaats van alles in een keer wanneer de deken af is. Volgen jullie het proces met me mee?

I crochet with hook 4.5, making granny squares to resemble the pixels in the painting. I made a couple of squares already and they are about 4.5 by 4.5cm big. I have to crochet at least 1800 squares in total, so it will keep me busy for quite some time! I’d like to keep you updated about my project every once in a while, instead of posting the blanket when it’s completely done. Will you follow me and the girl along the way?
