Meisje met de parel – final part

Ze is af! Het heeft een flinke tijd geduurd (ik zie dat mijn laatste blogpost hier van november vorig jaar was, oeps) maar uiteindelijk is ze afgekomen! Meisje met de parel is af! (als je niet weet waar ik het over heb, zie hier deel 1 en deel 2 van dit project). Ze heeft een flinke tijd stil gelegen, maar ergens in maart dit jaar begon het toch wel weer te kriebelen. Ik vond het namelijk super leuk om aan haar te werken, het was alleen zo ontzettend veel werk, er leek geen einde aan te komen! Afgelopen zomer had ik veel tijd dus kon ik een eindsprint trekken. Gek is dat altijd, als iets een tijd stilligt lijkt het altijd zo enorm veel werk, maar als je dan toch bezig gaat, gaat het vaak heel hard. En dat was hier dus ook zo!

She is done! It has taken a while (my last blogpost here was posted in November, oeps!) but she is done! Gearl with a pearl earring is done! (if you have no idea what I am talking  about, check part 1 and part 2 here). I have not worked on her for a couple of months, but somewhere in March I really wanted to get her finished. I liked working on her a lot, it was just a lot of work. there didn't seem to be an end to it! During my summer holidays I had a lot of time on my hands, and then, all of a sudden, she was done!

Ik ben zo blij met het resultaat! Ik vind haar echt heel mooi geworden en ik vind dat je heel goed kunt zien dat het het Meisje met de parel voorstelt. Ik ben ook heel blij dat ik heb gekozen voor het Merino Soft garen, ik vind de kleuren echt prachtig, rustig en diep, en dat past heel goed bij dit schilderij. En het is ook nog eens super zacht!

I am so happy with the result! I think she look beautiful. She does look like the original doesn't she? I am glad I chose to use Merino Soft yarn for this project, the colours are gorgeous, calm and intense, it just fits so well with the painting. And besides that it is so incredibly soft!

Ik wilde per se de vierkantjes aan elkaar zetten met de kleur garen van een van de twee vierkantjes die ik op dat moment aan elkaar zette (want dan zag je de naad niet). Het was rustgevend werk, je ziet de deken groeien. Hoewel het veel tijd koste ben ik achteraf wel heel blij dat ik dat zo gedaan heb, want het resultaat is echt een stuk mooier dan bij Het huwelijksportret (daar had ik alles vastgezet met donkerbruin, en dat zie je toch).

I wanted to hand-sew the squares together with the colour of the yarn I had used for one of the two squares I wanted to attach to each other (because that way you wouldn't see the jointing). The work was soothing, the blanket grew under my hands. Eventhough it took a lot of time, I am glad I did it this way, because the result is so much better than with Het huwelijksportret (I used dark brown yarn for all the squares, and it shows).

Zoals je in deel 1 van deze serie kunt lezen was mijn werkwijze als volgt: ik verpixelde het schilderij, maakte een raster met hetzelfde aantal vierkantjes, ik maakte een staalkaart met alle kleuren garen, gaf die kleuren nummers en vulde die nummers aan de hand van het verpixelde schilderij in op het raster. Zo ontstond het patroon. Als ik wilde haken hoefde ik alleen maar op het raster te kijken om te weten welk kleur garen ik nodig had. Super simpel!

In part 1 of this series I explained my working procedure: I pixelated the painting, I made a grid with the same amount of squares, I took samples of the yarn, stuck them to a piece of paper and gave each colour a number. Finally, I filled in the numbers of the yarn in the grid by searching for the right colours on the pixelated painting. That’s how I made the pattern. When I wanted to crochet I just had to take a look on the grid to know what yarn I had to use. So easy!

Een wijze vrouw (mijn moeder en beeldend kunstenaar) zei eens tegen mij: je moet net zo tevreden zijn met de voorkant van je werk als met de achterkant. Ik heb daarom veel werk besteed aan het wegwerken van de draadjes, ik wilde die achterkant mooi hebben. Daardoor is de achterkant van het kleed een spiegelbeeld geworden van de voorkant, grappig!

A wise women (my mother and visual artist) once told me: you have to be just as pleased with the fornt of your work as with the back of your work. So, I took some time to work on sewing in the ends, that back had to be beautiful! Now, the back of the blanket is a mirror image of the front :)

Ik heb eerst alle gekleurde vierkantjes gehaakt en die vervolgens in horizontale rijen aan elkaar gezet. Vervolgens heb ik die rijen weer aan elkaar gemaakt. Op die manier ontstond haar profiel, daarna kon ik de deken aanvullen met zwarte vierkantjes. Om het geheel af te maken heb ik een rand gehaakt van simpele stokjes (de rand moest niet teveel afleiden) in Lizzy van Scheepjes (kleur 03), omdat ik graag een gouden lijst wilde. Dat hoort zo bij een schilderij!

First, I made all the coloured squares and I attached them in horizontal rows. Then I sew the horizontal rows together, that way I made her body. The next step was adding the black squares, so it became a rectangle. To finish the blanket I added a golden border with Lizzy (colour 03) to resemble a golden frame. That's how it's supposed to be with a painting I think!

Mocht je trouwens Meisje met de parel in het echt willen zien (het echte schilderij dus, van Vermeer): ze hangt in het Mauritshuis in Den Haag. Ik heb dat natuurlijk ook gedaan in het kader van mijn project, ik vind het altijd zo bijzonder om schilderijen waar je van houdt in het echt te zien! Het maken van 'mijn meisje' was een lang proces, maar ik vond het ontzettend leuk om te doen. Ik ben blij met haar!

IIf you would like to see Girl with a pearl earring in the flesh (the painting, by Vermeer): you can find her in the Mauritshuis in The Hague, The Netherlands. I visited her because I wanted to see her while making my blanket. I think it is so special to see paintings you love for real! It was a long process, making 'my girl' as I called her, but I really liked doing it. I love how she turned out!

Mouse rattle/rammelaar

Op de afgelopen brei- en haakdagen zag ik een kartonnen doosje staan (naast allemaal andere fantastische spulletjes, waarover later meer) wat meteen mijn aandacht trok. In eerste instantie kocht ik het niet, maar aan het eind van de dag ging ik toch terug om het te halen.

Among other things, I saw a little cardboard box at the brei- en haakdagen (knit and crochet days) which I had to buy because it looked so cute!

In het doosje zaten precies genoeg spulletjes om een rammelaar/bijtring te maken! Ik ben helaas vergeten om een foto te maken van de inhoud van het doosje, maar er zat van alles in: garen (Scheepjes Catona), een bijtring, een klein zakje met vulspul, een rammelaar en een haakpatroon.

In the box there were exactly enough thingies to make a rattle/teething ring! I forgot to make a picture of the contents of the box, but there was a lot of stuff in it: yarn (Scheepjes Catona), a teething ring, a little pouch with toy filling, a rattle and a crochet pattern.

Het muisje was heel leuk en snel om te maken. Het patroontje is duidelijk, het enige lastige was om om de bijtring heen te haken, je hebt gewoon heel weinig ruimte voor je naald. Maar dan nog heb ik de hele rammelaar in een avond gemaakt. Ik vind het echt een aanrader, dit doosje! Leuk detail is dat er in het kopje een rammelaartje zit, waardoor het geluid maakt als je (of een baby) er mee schut. Het patroon is van Christel Krukkert, ik heb het muisje gehaakt op naald 3.

I enjoyed making the mouse, it was a quick and easy project. The pattern is clear, the only hard thing was crocheting around the ring, there is no place for the needle. But still: I finished the rattle in one evening. I really recommend this cute little box! A nice detail: you put a rattle in the head of the mouse, so it makes a sound when you (or a baby of course) shake it. The pattern is designed by Christel Krukkert, and I have used a 3mm crochet hook.

Het doosje is van het merk HardiCraft, ik had er nog niet eerder van gehoord maar ze hebben hobbymaterialen, waaronder verschillende haakpakketten. Als ik de doosjes nog eens tegenkom ga ik er zeker weer een kopen, het is echt super handig om alles zo bij elkaar te hebben. Kijk bijvoorbeeld eens hier: klik! Die cactusjes zijn toch super schattig?

The box is designed by HardiCraft. I had not heard of that brand before, but they sell crafty stuff, including different crochet boxes. If I ever come accros these boxes again I will definitely buy one, it's so easy to have everything there in the right amount. Check this one out for example: click! How cute are these cacti? Super cute right?

KreaDoe 2014!

De KreaDoe! Voor mij toch wel een van de hoogtepunten van het jaar :) Ik ga er al zeker tien jaar heen, altijd met mijn moeder. Ik koop de kaartjes (het verwenpakket, met appeltaart!) zij maakt de broodjes en neemt pakjes drinken mee. Zodra de datum bekend is zetten we 'm in onze agenda's en weken van te voren appen we elkaar regelmatig hoeveel zin we er in hebben ('nog twee weken!'). Afgelopen vrijdag was het dan eindelijk zo ver!

The KreaDoe! One of my favorite moments every year :) I already go to this craft fair for at least ten years, always with my mum. I buy the tickets (the 'pamper package', with appelpie!) she makes sandwiches and brings something to drink. As soon as we know when the KreaDoe will be held, we block the date in our agenda's, and we text each other regularly about how much fun it's going to be. And finally, last friday was KreaDoe time!

De weken voorafgaand aan de KreaDoe krijg ik altijd heel veel inspiratie voor nieuwe projecten. Ik moet dan echt op mijn handen zitten om niet alvast wat te bestellen, want ik wil dat toch het liefst op de KreaDoe zelf kopen! Een van de projecten waar ik aan wil beginnen is een jacquard gebreide sjaal gemaakt van restjes sokkenwol. Ik hoopte kleine bolletjes wol te vinden op de beurs, maar dat bleek toch lastiger dan gedacht! We waren eigenlijk al van plan weg te gaan, maar besloten toch even snel door de eerste hal te lopen (we gaan altijd eerst naar de achterste hal, daar is het 's ochtends rustiger en er staan meer kraampjes). En daar liep ik tegen de stand van Wol&Co aan... Dat was het! Allemaal bakken met kleine bolletjes wol van 10 gram (55 meter) in alle kleuren van de regenboog. De mensen van Wol&Co waren super vriendelijk en heel enthousiast over mijn project. Er stonden grote balen met een kilo wol op de planken, en als er een kleur tussen zat die niet in de bakken lag draaiden ze zo een paar bolletjes voor me. Kan niet wachten om aan mijn sjaal te beginnen!

I always get a lot of inspiration for new projects the weeks preceding the KreaDoe. I have to make sure I don't order any yarn then, because I want to buy it on the craft fair! One of the projects I wanted to start with is a jacquard knitted scarf made of little bits of sock yarn. I was hoping I would find little skeins of wool on the KreaDoe, but that was harder than I thought it would be! We actually already decided we would leave, when we stumbled upon the stand of Wol&Co... Heaven! A lot of baskets with tiny skeins of 10 grams of yarn (55 meters) in every colour of the rainbow. The people there where so friendly, and they were super enthusiastic when I told them about my project. There were big 1 kilo skeins of yarn in cupboard and when I saw a colour that wasn't in the baskets they would make me a tiny skein promptly. I can't wait to get started!

Naast haken (en breien) vind ik het ook leuk om foto's te maken. Ik heb dan ook héél veel foto's, maar ik deed daar eigenlijk niet zo veel mee, Sinds maart dit jaar doe ik aan Project Life, een manier om makkelijk en snel foto's vast te leggen. Super leuk, dus ik ging zeker op zoeken naar spulletjes daarvoor! Die vond ik onder andere bij Scrapdelight! Zoals je kunt zien was ik op zoek naar blauw/houten kleuren :) De stiften rechtsboven zijn Copic Ciao pennen, die hebben aan de ene kant een gewone punt en aan de andere kant een soort kwastje. Die wilde ik al een tijdje hebben, dus ik was super blij dat ik ze vond op de KreaDoe.

Besides crocheting (and knitting) I like to take pictures. I've got a lót of pictures, but I don't do anything with them. As of March this year I found Project Life, a fun and easy way to store your photo's. I like working with my photo's like that, so I was on a hunt for bits and pieces that would fit in my Project Life! As you can see, I was looking for blue/wooden items :) I found them at Scrapdelight. The markers top right are Copic Ciao markers. The have a normal tip on one side and a brush on the other side. I have been looking for them for a while now, so I was lucky to find them at the KreaDoe.

Een ander project waar ik graag mee wilde beginnen was een ripple sjaal die zou passen bij mijn nieuwe grijze winterjas en ik wilde daarvoor Scheepjes Stonewashed XL gebruiken. Ik had al eens de normale Stonewashed gebruikt, en ik vond dat super fijn werken, dus ik was heel benieuwd naar de XL versie. Ik ben in de trein naar huis meteen begonnen met deze sjaal en ben al een heel eind!

Another project I wanted to start was a ripple scarf that would fit with my new gray winter coat. I wanted to use Scheepjes Stonewashed XL for this project. I have used the normal Stonewashed before, and I liked the look and feel, so I was eager to buy the XL version for this scarf. I started the scarf in the train back home, it works up quickly!

Dit ben ik bij de stand van Wol&Co, met mijn Southbay sjaal, op zoek naar de juiste kleurtjes, helemaal in mijn element :)

Walda hat

Het is weer mutsen tijd! Het is alweer een tijd geleden dat ik mijn vorige muts haakte. Zodra ik de Walda hat zag op Ravelry wilde ik 'm maken. Ik was heel benieuwd hoe dat 'geweven' effect bereikt werd.

It is beanie time! It's been a while since I last made hat. As soon as I saw the Walda hat on Ravelry I wanted to make it. I was curious to know how the 'woven' effect was accomplished.

Het effect is bereikt door back-post en front-post steken. Ik had die nog nooit gebruikt, en ik vond het eerlijk gezegd best lastig! Je bent steeds bezig bent met zoeken naar de juiste plek om in te steken, wegvouwen van gemaakte steken om daar onderdoor te haken enzovoort, maar het was wel heel leuk om te doen. Ik vind het leuk om nieuwe steken te leren, en helemaal als je daar relatief snel een eindproduct voor terug krijgt. Ik ben maar twee avonden bezig geweest met de muts!

The effect happens by making back-post and front-post stitches. I had never used those, and I found it rather difficult to make them! You are constantly searching for the right place whereto stick your needle, but it was fun to do. I like learning new techniques, especially when the end product is finished quickly. I have been working om my hat for only two nights!

I love this structure!

Ik koos voor Scheepjes Highlands garen in de kleur 506 en haakte met naald 6. Ik heb drie bollen opgemaakt. Ik vind tweed garen heel gaaf voor mutsen, het geeft een stoere en warme uitstraling wat perfect is voor de herfst/winter. Ik heb mijn ribbed pompom beanie ook gehaakt met tweed, van de Zeeman. Dat is al fijn garen, maar ik merk toch duidelijk verschil met het tweed van Scheepjes: het is veel zachter!

I chose Scheepjes Highlands yarn colour 506 en used hook 6. I have used 3 skeins of yarn. I like tweed for hats, it gives them a rough and warm look, which is perfect for fall/winter. I have used tweed (from the 'Zeeman', a Dutch discount store) for my ribbed pompom beanie as well, but there is a big difference between these two tweed yarns: Scheepjes is so much softer!

Laat de winter maar komen!

Unicat Shouthbay

In mijn vorige blogpost schreef ik over Unicat, mijn nieuwe ontdekte liefde :) Ik kocht mijn tweede bol bij Blij dat ik brei en wilde daarmee een Southbay sjaal maken. Dat is goed gelukt!

In my last blogpost I wrote about Unicat, my new found love :) I bought my second skein at Blij dat ik brei and I wanted to make a Southbay shawl out of it. That worked out well!

Het patroon voor de Southbay sjaal kan overal op internet gevonden worden. Het patroon is niet moeilijk, maar je moet wel opletten waar je mee bezig bent. Ik haakte met een 3.5mm naald.

The pattern for the Southbay shawl can be found everywhere on the internet. The pattern isn't difficult, but you still have to pay attention to what you are doing. I used a 3.5 hook.

Ik vond de kleuren van mijn eerste Unicat bol al prachtig, maar deze kleuren zijn helemaal geweldig. Ik denk dat dat komt doordat de groene en blauwe kleuren dichter bij elkaar liggen, waardoor het eindresultaat, de sjaal, meer een geheel is dan de roze-groene.

I really loved the colours of my first Unicat skein, but the colours of this skein are even more amazing. I think that is due to the fact that the green and blue tones are more alike, so the end result, the scarf, is more of a whole than the pink-green one.

Daar is 'ie dan! Gaaf he! Ik heb m'n sjaal nadat 'ie af was geblokt (natgemaakt en vastgepind). Dat was voor mij voor het eerst, maar ik ben heel blij dat ik het heb gedaan, het patroon komt er echt veel beter door uit! 

There he is! Isn't it a gorgeous shawl? I blocked my shawl as soon as I finished it (making the scarf wet and then pinning it on a hard surface). I used this technique for the first time and I am glad I did, because the pattern is so much more visible after blocking!

Diamond lace scarf

De patronen van Wieke van Keulen  zijn fantastisch! Ze zijn romantisch maar toch modern, en ik ben door haar van kanten haakwerk gaan houden. Het is best ingewikkeld in het begin, je moet op blijven letten, maar het resultaat is heel gaaf! Mijn eerste Wieke-patroon was de square lace triangle. Zodra die af was werd 'ie ingepikt door mijn moeder, dus ik heb helaas geen foto's ;) Op de Haakmeet kocht ik bij Kralalien voor het eerst een bol Unicat. Ik had daar al vaker over gehoord en ik was wel benieuwd, maar zodra ik die prachtige bollen voor het eerst in het echt zag was ik verkocht! Dat kleurverloop! Eenmaal thuis kon ik niet wachten om te beginnen aan mijn volgende project met mijn Unicat: de diamon lace scarf  van Wieke van Keulen!

The patterns by Wieke van Keulen are amazing! They are romantic but at the same time modern. Wieke made me love lace crochet. It is quite difficult at first, you have to pay attention to your stitches, but the results are awesome! My first Wieke-pattern was the square lace triangle which was 'stolen' by my mother as soon as I finished it, so I don't have any pictures ;) At the 'Haakmeet' (crochet meeting) I bought my first skein of Unicat yarn at Kralalien. I had heard about Unicat before, and I was curious about it, but as soon as I saw those skeins in real life I was addicted. Those colours! As soon as I arrived home with my Unicat I started my next project: the diamond lace scarf by Wieke van Keulen!

Onweerstaanbaar! Irresistible!

Unicat bestaat uit vier draden die om de beurt van kleur veranderen. Ik begon in het midden van de bol en had daar vier draadjes donker roze, vervolgens werd na een flink stuk één draadje donker roze licht roze enzovoort, tot aan drie draadjes donker groen aan het einde. Het kleurverloop is daardoor heel subtiel.

Unicat consists of four strands of yarn, which change colour really slowly. I started in the middle of the cake, and began with four strands of dark pink. After a while, one strand of dark pink was replaced with a light pink strand, and so on until I finished with four dark green strands. That makes the colour changes lovely subtle. 

Super gaaf he, dat patroon! Je werkt in de breedte van de sjaal, dus langzaam maar zeker komt het patroon te voorschijn. Ik heb gehaakt met naald 3.5.

Isn't the pattern awesome? You crochet along the short side of the scarf, and eventually the pattern comes alive! I used a 3.5 hook for this scarf.

Mijn bol Unicat was 900 meter lang. Super lang zou je zeggen, maar ik vond mijn sjaal net iets te kort en dus heb ik franje toegevoegd. In mijn katoen stash vond ik twee bolletjes die perfect pasten bij de kleuren van de Unicat en ik vind het effect best geinig!

My Unicat skein was 900 meters long. Quite long, but not long enough for this scarf. I decided to add fring at both ends of the scarf. I happened to find two skeins of cotton in my stash which matched with the Unicat quite well. I like the effect on the scarf!

Vlak nadat ik deze sjaal af had heb ik een nieuwe bol Unicat gekocht, daarover binnenkort meer!

Right after I fnished this scarf I bought another skein of Unicat, more about that skein later!
