Unicat Shouthbay

In mijn vorige blogpost schreef ik over Unicat, mijn nieuwe ontdekte liefde :) Ik kocht mijn tweede bol bij Blij dat ik brei en wilde daarmee een Southbay sjaal maken. Dat is goed gelukt!

In my last blogpost I wrote about Unicat, my new found love :) I bought my second skein at Blij dat ik brei and I wanted to make a Southbay shawl out of it. That worked out well!

Het patroon voor de Southbay sjaal kan overal op internet gevonden worden. Het patroon is niet moeilijk, maar je moet wel opletten waar je mee bezig bent. Ik haakte met een 3.5mm naald.

The pattern for the Southbay shawl can be found everywhere on the internet. The pattern isn't difficult, but you still have to pay attention to what you are doing. I used a 3.5 hook.

Ik vond de kleuren van mijn eerste Unicat bol al prachtig, maar deze kleuren zijn helemaal geweldig. Ik denk dat dat komt doordat de groene en blauwe kleuren dichter bij elkaar liggen, waardoor het eindresultaat, de sjaal, meer een geheel is dan de roze-groene.

I really loved the colours of my first Unicat skein, but the colours of this skein are even more amazing. I think that is due to the fact that the green and blue tones are more alike, so the end result, the scarf, is more of a whole than the pink-green one.

Daar is 'ie dan! Gaaf he! Ik heb m'n sjaal nadat 'ie af was geblokt (natgemaakt en vastgepind). Dat was voor mij voor het eerst, maar ik ben heel blij dat ik het heb gedaan, het patroon komt er echt veel beter door uit! 

There he is! Isn't it a gorgeous shawl? I blocked my shawl as soon as I finished it (making the scarf wet and then pinning it on a hard surface). I used this technique for the first time and I am glad I did, because the pattern is so much more visible after blocking!

Diamond lace scarf

De patronen van Wieke van Keulen  zijn fantastisch! Ze zijn romantisch maar toch modern, en ik ben door haar van kanten haakwerk gaan houden. Het is best ingewikkeld in het begin, je moet op blijven letten, maar het resultaat is heel gaaf! Mijn eerste Wieke-patroon was de square lace triangle. Zodra die af was werd 'ie ingepikt door mijn moeder, dus ik heb helaas geen foto's ;) Op de Haakmeet kocht ik bij Kralalien voor het eerst een bol Unicat. Ik had daar al vaker over gehoord en ik was wel benieuwd, maar zodra ik die prachtige bollen voor het eerst in het echt zag was ik verkocht! Dat kleurverloop! Eenmaal thuis kon ik niet wachten om te beginnen aan mijn volgende project met mijn Unicat: de diamon lace scarf  van Wieke van Keulen!

The patterns by Wieke van Keulen are amazing! They are romantic but at the same time modern. Wieke made me love lace crochet. It is quite difficult at first, you have to pay attention to your stitches, but the results are awesome! My first Wieke-pattern was the square lace triangle which was 'stolen' by my mother as soon as I finished it, so I don't have any pictures ;) At the 'Haakmeet' (crochet meeting) I bought my first skein of Unicat yarn at Kralalien. I had heard about Unicat before, and I was curious about it, but as soon as I saw those skeins in real life I was addicted. Those colours! As soon as I arrived home with my Unicat I started my next project: the diamond lace scarf by Wieke van Keulen!

Onweerstaanbaar! Irresistible!

Unicat bestaat uit vier draden die om de beurt van kleur veranderen. Ik begon in het midden van de bol en had daar vier draadjes donker roze, vervolgens werd na een flink stuk één draadje donker roze licht roze enzovoort, tot aan drie draadjes donker groen aan het einde. Het kleurverloop is daardoor heel subtiel.

Unicat consists of four strands of yarn, which change colour really slowly. I started in the middle of the cake, and began with four strands of dark pink. After a while, one strand of dark pink was replaced with a light pink strand, and so on until I finished with four dark green strands. That makes the colour changes lovely subtle. 

Super gaaf he, dat patroon! Je werkt in de breedte van de sjaal, dus langzaam maar zeker komt het patroon te voorschijn. Ik heb gehaakt met naald 3.5.

Isn't the pattern awesome? You crochet along the short side of the scarf, and eventually the pattern comes alive! I used a 3.5 hook for this scarf.

Mijn bol Unicat was 900 meter lang. Super lang zou je zeggen, maar ik vond mijn sjaal net iets te kort en dus heb ik franje toegevoegd. In mijn katoen stash vond ik twee bolletjes die perfect pasten bij de kleuren van de Unicat en ik vind het effect best geinig!

My Unicat skein was 900 meters long. Quite long, but not long enough for this scarf. I decided to add fring at both ends of the scarf. I happened to find two skeins of cotton in my stash which matched with the Unicat quite well. I like the effect on the scarf!

Vlak nadat ik deze sjaal af had heb ik een nieuwe bol Unicat gekocht, daarover binnenkort meer!

Right after I fnished this scarf I bought another skein of Unicat, more about that skein later!

Bluebird of Happiness

Ook ik ben gevallen voor het nieuwe Stone Washed garen van Scheepjes! Ik kocht drie bolletjes zonder te weten wat ik er mee wilde doen. Vorige week bedacht ik dat het leuk zou zijn om er de Bluebird of Happiness van Heidi Bears mee te maken! Ik vind de african flowers die zij gebruikt in haar patronen heel leuk en ik was benieuwd wat het effect zou zijn met Stone Washed.

I love the new Stone Washed yarn by Scheepjes! I bought three skeins without knowing what to make with them. Last week I decided it would be fun to make the Bluebird of Happiness by Heidi Bears with them! I really like the african flowers she uses in her patterns and I was curious what the effect would be with Stone Washed.

 En daar is ze! Ik twijfelde in eerste instantie of ik twee of drie kleuren moest gebruiken (want ik had er dus drie), maar na overleg met de haakcommunity werden het er twee: 801 en 807. Ik haakte met naald 3.5 en gebruikte 10mm glasogen.

And there she is! I didn't know if I should use two or three colours (because I had three colours), but after some consultation with other crochet fanatics I chose two colours: 801 and 807. I used a 3.5mm (E) hook and 10mm glaseyes.

 

Het vogeltje was heel snel klaar, zeker als je het vergelijkt met andere african flower animals. Ik heb er al meerdere gemaakt, onder andere Puff the Magic Stegosaurus, Lollo the African Flower Bear en deze en deze Happy Hippo! Over die grote knuffels doe ik wel twee á drie weken, maar dit vogeltje was in drie avonden klaar.

The bird was finished quickly, especially when you compare him with the other flower animals. I have made a couple of animals before, for example Puff the Magic Stegosuarus, Lollo the African Flower Bear and this and this Happy Hippo. Those bigger animals take me about two or three weeks to make them, but this little birdie took me three evenings to finish.

Ik vind het stonewashed effect super leuk! Het vogeltje is heel makkelijk en leuk om te maken, dus ik denk dat ik nog een paar kleurtjes Stone Washed haal en een serie vogeltjes maak. Kan ik ze leuk naast elkaar zetten :) Het vogeltje is ongeveer 20cm lang en 15cm hoog.

I like the stonewashed effect a lot! The birdie is easy and fun to make, so I think I will buy a couple more colours Stone Washed to make a series of birdies :) The birdie measures 20cm in lenght and 15cm in height.

Kitty soft toy

Zoals ik hier al zei: ik wilde een soort knuffel/kussen maken met mijn kat Malou als model. Het was een experiment, want ik heb niet eerder met vilt als hoofdmateriaal gewerkt en ik heb geen naaimachine. Maar het is gelukt!

Like I said here: I wanted to make a flat soft toy and have my cat Malou as a model. It was an experiment, because I have never worked with felt in this amount, and I do not have a sewing machine. But it worked!

Eigenlijk was het heel simpel, ik kocht verschillende kleuren vilt en nam de crème kleur als basis. Daarop tekende ik een poes, en die knipte ik twee keer uit.

It was really easy actually. I bought felt in different colours and used cream colour as a basis. I draw a cat on the felt and cut her out twice.

Daarna naaide ik de twee delen met de hand op elkaar en draaide het geheel binnenste buiten. Vervolgens keek ik goed naar de foto's van Malou en knipte de losse delen uit de andere kleuren vilt. Deze naaide ik dan weer op de vilten poes. 

When I had done that, I sewed the two parts together (by hand) and turned it inside out. Then I took a good look at pictures I had of Malou, I cut out the parts I needed and sewed them on the felt cat.

Ze lijkt best een beetje, toch?

They do look alike a bit, don't they?

Solid granny square pillow

In mijn vorige blog schreef ik al dat ik was begonnen met solid granny squares om een kussen te maken. En die is nu af! Zoals gezegd heb ik Drops Paris Recycled Denim gebruikt in de kleuren 100, 101 en 103 en ik heb gehaakt met naald 5.

In my previous blogpost I mentioned I was working on a pillow made out of solid granny squares. It is finished! I have used Drops Paris Recycled Denim colours 100, 101 and 103 and a 5mm (H) hook.

Ik heb ongeveer anderhalf bolletje gebruikt van de kleuren 100 en 103 en twee van 102, omdat ik de laatste heb gebruikt om alle vierkantjes aan elkaar te haken. Dat heb ik gedaan door de goede kanten op elkaar te leggen en in de achterste lussen een halve vaste te haken. 

I have used about a skein and a half of the colours 100 and 103 and two skeins of colour 102, because I used that one to join all the squares. I did that by putting two squares together with the right side facing each other and slip stitching in the back loops only. 

Ik vind het altijd mooi om te zien dat alle hoekgaten lijnen vormen in een ruiten patroon. Voor de achterkant heb ik gewoon stof gebruikt en deze met de hand vastgezet met naald en draad.

I like that all the corner holes come together in some sort of diamond pattern. I have used fabric for the back of the pillow, which I sewed together by hand.

Crafty stuff

Vorige week donderdag was mijn dertigste verjaardag. Ik kreeg super veel kadootjes, veel met knutselen als thema! Zo kreeg ik onderstaand bouwpakket voor een vilten vogelhuisje, die ik al eerder bij de Action had gespot. Ik heb 'm gister in elkaar gezet, leuk ding he!

I had my 30th birthday last week and I got a lot of crafty goodies. One of those was a do-it-yourself kit of a birdhouse. I put it together yesterday, I think it's cute!

Een ander kado was een doos vol Drops Paris bolletjes. Ik had de kleurtjes zelf uitgekozen, maar ik werd super gelukkig toen ik de doos opende en ze allemaal bij elkaar zag liggen. Prachtig! Ik ben van plan er een tapestry tas van te maken, waarover hier uiteraard later meer.

Another gift was a box full of Drops Paris skeins. I chose the colours myself, but I was delighted when I opened the box and saw them together. Gorgeous! I want to make a tapestry bag with them, I will tell you more about the project later.

Nu ik het toch over Drops Paris heb, ik ben bezig met een projectje in de nieuwe Recycled Denim kleuren. Ik gebruik de kleuren 100, 101 en 103 (ik vind 102 niet zo mooi) en maak solid granny squares met naald 5. Het moet een kussen worden, dus ik heb nog even te gaan ;)

Something else about Drops Paris, I'm working on a project with the new Recycled Demim colours. I'm using colours 100, 101 and 103 (I don't like 102 that much) and I'm making solid granny squares using a size 5 hook. It is supposed to become a pillow, so I still got to make a lot of squares ;)

Een ander project waar ik mee wil beginnen is een vilten versie van mijn poes Malou, ze is de poes die onder andere in mijn vorige post in haar nieuwe mandje ligt. We hebben haar op mijn verjaardag in moeten laten slapen :( Ze was al heel oud, 19 jaar, en had allerlei kwaaltjes, maar we missen haar enorm! Gelukkig hebben we haar zusje Mirthe nog. Ik heb vilt gekocht in haar kleuren en wil dus een soort platte knuffel maken. Ben benieuwd of het lukt!

Another project I want to start with is a felted version of my cat Malou, she is the cat who is lying in her new felted bed in my last post. We had to put her to sleep on my birthday :( She was really old, 19 years, and she had a lot of ailments, but we miss her a lot! Luckily we still have her sister Mirthe. I have bought felt in het colours and I want to make a flat soft toy. I hope it will work!

Felted cat bed

Een tijdje geleden schreef ik hier al dat ik voor het eerst een mandje had gehaakt en vervolgens had laten vilten in de wasmachine. De katten waren er gek op, maar omdat het mandje te klein was geworden na het vervilten wilde ik graag een grotere versie maken speciaal voor hen. 

A while ago I wrote about felting a basket (here). My cats loved the basket, but it turned out to be to small for them after felting it. I decided I wanted to make a bigger basket just for them.

Ik heb hetzelfde proces gevolgd als de vorige keer, gehaakt met naald 4, alleen heb ik nu in plaats van vier bollen zes bollen Drops Eskimo (rood). Ik haakte eerst met  ongeveer drie en halve bol Eskimo een platte cirkel, ik begon met acht vasten in een magische ring en meerdere naar gevoel. Toen ik het gevoel had dat de cirkel groot genoeg was (er konden twee katten op, dat leek me groot genoeg na het vilten) haakte ik een ronde alleen in de achterste lusjes zonder te meerderen, en vervolgens verder omhoog zonder te meerderen. 

I followed the same proces for this cat bed as I did with the other basket, with a 4mm hook, only this time I used six skeins Drops Eskimo (red) in stead of four, I started by making a circle with about three and a half skeins, by crocheting 8 sc in a magic ring and increasing where I felt like it was necessary. When I thought the circle was big enough (my two cats could sit on it together, that would be big enough after felting) I  crocheted back loops only for one round and after that I crocheted without increasing.

Het mandje is toch een beetje klein geworden na het vilten, maar gelukkig houden katten van kleine mandjes :) Vooral Malou maakt er veel gebruik van!

The bed turned out to be a little small, but luckily cats like small baskets :) Malou uses it a lot!
